With that covered, let’s take a closer look at the key features and capabilities of the Insta360 GO Ultra.

Key updated features for content creation

The Insta360 GO Ultra brings an upgrade to image quality compared to previous GO models. A new slightly larger 1/1.28-inch sensor comes with a new 5nm AI chip, which enables smoother 4K video recording at up to 60 frames per second. The larger sensor captures more detail, improved dynamic range, and delivers clearer results across a wider range of lighting conditions, such as during sunrise or sunset.

Low-light performance sees another leap thanks to the introduction of PureVideo mode. This setting uses AI-powered noise reduction to improve detail and clarity by up to 200%, making it easier to capture useable footage during the evening or indoors.

For stills, the GO Ultra action camera is now able to capture very high-resolution 50MP images, with support for PureShot low-light mode, Active HDR, and in-camera creative filters.

Unlike previous GO models, storage is no longer a limitation thanks to the inclusion of a replaceable SD card slot. This gives users the freedom to buy whichever cards they want rather than rely on built-in 64GB or 128GB storage, so they can shoot more, for longer. Battery life is also extended, with up to 180 minutes of runtime when using the included Action Pod, which also has a 2.5-inch flip touchscreen for easier framing and playback.

Footage is kept steady with the latest version of Insta360’s trusted FlowState stabilisation, which now has three modes depending on the type of movement being captured. For POV recording, the camera offers a wider 156° field of view, while a MegaView option removes edge distortion for more natural-looking images.

There’s also a built-in magnetic mounting system, which makes it easy to attach the GO Ultra to your clothing or any compatible action cam accessories, which enables completely hands-free recording from different angles. But what type of stuff can you record with the Go Ultra? Let’s find out next.

What is the GO Ultra Action Camera Good for?

The Insta360 GO Ultra is for everyday content creation, whether out exploring, spending time with family and friends, or capturing something funny in the moment. It’s small enough to wear without barely noticing, easy to use with one hand, and footage looks great straight out of camera, so you don’t need any editing knowhow.

This makes it ideal for a broad range of people, including families who want to film their kids growing up, vloggers and creators who share content on social media, and anyone looking to capture life without carrying a bigger camera around.

Here are a few things you can record with the GO Ultra:

  • POV content while cycling, hiking or skating
  • Family days out, holidays or kids parties
  • Vlogs and updates for TikTok or Reels
  • Behind-the-scenes clips for school or uni projects
  • Travel scenes from your own perspective
  • Creative sports or activities
  • Pet cam footage using magnetic mounts
  • Clips for social media

GO Ultra is made to be there with you whatever you’re up to, and once you’re used to it, you don’t even notice you’re wearing it. Next we take a look at the new model vs the outgoing one.

The ultra in the pod

Is it easy to use?

Insta360 GO Ultra is so small that you can wear it without thinking. It can be clipped onto your clothes using the magnetic pendant, held with a tripod, or stuck to something with one of the included mounts. It’s easy to start recording too, simply press once and it begins, so you’re less likely to miss a great moment.

There are plenty of different modes that take care of commonplace content, like Portrait Mode which includes AI technology for more accurate results, various different Photo Modes and of course the new PureVideo Mode already mentioned. Audio is handled by upgraded internal mics, so sound is fab straight out of the box. Although you can’t add an external mic, you can add a GO camera wind muff to control wind noise.

The included Action Pod makes it easier to control if you want to be more hands-on. A 2.5-inch flip screen is sharp, and useful for checking your framing or watching clips back. Menus are simple and don’t get in the way, and you don’t need to dig through loads of settings just to start filming.

The Insta360 GO Ultra field of view is so wide at 156° that it captures most of the scene in front, so you don’t have to worry much about missing elements off to the sides. It also has great battery life, and charges quickly so you can keep on recording without stopping for too long.

Anyone who’s used to GO 3 or 3S, will notice that this version feels familiar but with more polish, with extra battery life and better stability, especially in low light.

Should you upgrade?

If you already own the GO 3 or 3S, this isn’t just a minor update. You get double the frame rate at 4K 60p, better low-light performance, higher resolution photos, and the ability to swap out SD cards so you’re not stuck with limited onboard storage.

That said, if you only film short clips in good light and don’t need the new features, the GO 3S is still a great camera. For everyone else, especially if you’re new to Insta360, the GO Ultra makes more sense, as it is faster, with higher resolution, more flexible, and works a little bit better for everyday use.
