Lytro began making cameras in 2011 but the release of the Lytro Illum in late 2014 is when the company caught the attention of the photographic world.

Their range of cameras do not have a conventional flat sensor, but instead record rays of light through the lens.

Light field cameras, as they are known, have several applications are as a result but one of the key benefits is that because the sensors detect the rays of light, rather than a projection of the light on to a flat surface, this information can be used post-capture to re-focus the light and thus the resulting image.
