Voigtlander Macro APO-Ultron D 35mm f/2 Lens for Nikon Z Summary

The Voigtlander Macro APO-Ultron D 35mm f/2 Lens for Nikon Z mount is a large-aperture, compact standard macro. This Voigtlander lens has been designed specifically for APS-C sized (DX format) Nikon mirrorless cameras using the Nikon Z mount, which provides an equivalent 52.5mm focal width (full-frame equivalent).

The compact macro lens is equipped with electronic contacts, which communicate data between the lens and the body. In addition to EXIF data and 3-axis in-body image stabilisation, the lens has three types of focusing support functions:

  1. focusing by colour changing of the focus point frame
  2. peaking function focusing
  3. focusing with the enlargement button

The lens has a maximum F2 aperture, which is extremely large for a macro lens, yet it remains compact and lightweight, weighing just 290g. The special manual focus method enables the lens to shorten the lens extension, compared to the method of extending the entire optical system, while at the same time ensuring stable image quality from long distance to extremely close.

Key Lens Features

  1. Designed exclusively for Nikon Z mount DX format cameras
  2. Data communication with the camera body
  3. All-metal lens barrel, which is rigid and durable
  4. Reliable accurate manual-only focusing
  5. Beautiful bokeh from a 10-blade aperture diaphragm
  6. Styling reminiscent of SLR MF lenses
  7. Maximum magnification of 1:2
  8. Close minimum focusing distance of 0.163m
  9. Apochromatic design for faithful colour reproduction

Voigtlander Macro APO-Ultron D 35mm f/2 Lens for Nikon Z in More Detail

The all-metal design combines beautiful retro aesthetics with functionality, to enhance the pleasure of manual operation and the all-metal helicoid ring provides a silky-smooth focusing feel. In addition to the shallow focusing effect of close-up photography, users will enjoy a large bokeh effect, characteristic of large-aperture macro photography.

This lens is recommended for macro photography, as well as table photography, portraits and landscapes, as it delivers impressive image quality regardless of distance to the subject. A compact, straight-type dedicated screw-in hood is included. If you crave an even wider aperture lens without macro capabilities, the Voigtlander D35mm F/1.2 Nokton Lens could be just what you are looking for.

This lens is equipped with electronic contacts, but there are restrictions on the bodies that can transfer lens data. Please check the list for Body Firmware EXIF compatibility below.

Nikon camera body firmware

  • Z7 v3.4 or later
  • Z50 v2.2 or later
  • Z6 II v1.3 or later
  • Z fc v1.0 or later
  • Z6 v3.4 or later
  • Z5 v1.2 or later
  • Z7 II v1.3 or later
  • Z9 v1.0 or later

If the firmware is a previous version to that listed above, some functions may be limited, and when using a full-frame Nikon body, the imaging range needs to be amended manually.

Looking to sell your Voigtlander Macro APO-Ultron D 35mm f/2 Lens for Nikon Z?

Our Verdict

This beautiful classically styled Voigtlander lens joins the Nokton 40mm f/1.2 Aspherical Lens for Nikon Z, with two new Nikon Z lenses released simultaneously. The MACRO APO-ULTRON D35mm F2 features an all-metal design with robust build, and includes an all-metal helicoid ring, which provides an all-round satisfying shooting experience. The benefits of a manual focus lens include the ability to entirely immerse yourself into each moment and concentrate on the subject, which is supported by three types of focus assist, including focus peaking. This is particularly useful for macro, where precise focusing is essential and MF is often preferable.

The electronic contacts in the lens mount capture full EXIF data as well as harnessing Nikon camera in-body stabilisation, although at just 290g this compact standard lens will be easy to handhold.

The APO-Ultron D 35mm f/2 also excels in low light, which is great not only for macro photography, but also when shooting street photography, naturally lit portraits and landscapes. The 10-bladed aperture design renders beautiful bokeh, with smooth out of focus areas when shooting wide open with a shallow depth of field. You can separate your subjects beautifully with this standard lens, as well as gain a deep depth of field for landscapes and city shots. For anyone who enjoys manual focusing and loves shooting with a standard prime, this compact macro lens is sure to be a popular choice.
