No online camera or retail camera shop is complete without an extensive range tripods including Mantroffo tripods, Slik tripods, Velbond , Gitzo and Giottos. The choice of camera tripods and heads can seem bewildering but without doubt a camera tripod is one of the most valuable camera accessories you can have in terms of imrpoving your photography and broadening your creative possibilities. The choice of tripod heads can be just as consfusing and often more expensive than the tripod itself. The tripod head should give the photographer the accuracy of camera position and adjustment of position that the subject requires. For example for landscape photographers a spirit level is essential and movement of the head must have a high degree of fine control especially on the horizontal axis. By contrast a wildlife photographer with a huge 600mm fixed focus pro lens will require not only a head that can take the weight of the lens but give the photographer the speed and fluidity to track a bird of pray in whatever direction it chooses.
There are two distinctly different types of tripod head, with some unique variations to support alterative needs within the photographic community. Ball heads offer high speed and manoeuvrability, ideal for photographers shooting portraits, sport, or wildlife. However they can however be a bit haphazard if you are after precise movements for macro or landscape photography. To support these applications the conventional three-way head is the preferred choice, restricting movements to one plane at a time. Finally if your photography is highly varied and you cover multiple genres manufacturers offer heads with pistol type mechanisms these offer improved control over the ball head whilst maintaining the desirable speed and manoeuvrability.
