Level 1

Suitable for: Photographers who are using a DSLR for the first time and have little or no prior knowledge of the basics skills required or those who are moving up from a compact camera.

What is covered on the Level 1 course?

  • Fundamentals of exposure  (shutter speeds and apertures) and how this ultimately effects how your image is captured
  • ISO and film speeds and how their use can effect exposure
  • Auto Focus – how the modern auto focus systems work
  • Explanation of the various options available with regards Quality
  • Introduction / explanation of the RAW quality format
  • Automated program modes and how they work
  • Use of Aperture and Shutter priority semi automatic modes
  • Use of different lenses
  • Depth of field explained
  • Metering – how your camera meters light and the various options available
  • How to Understand Histograms and compensate accordingly
  • Formatting of memory cards and the associated importance
  • Basic navigation of the camera’s menu

Level 2

Suitable for: Those who have attended the Level 1 course and wish to progress to understand the specifics related to the use of their particular camera model 
OR Those who have sufficient knowledge of the basics and wish to progress to the specifics related to their particular camera mode.

What is covered on the Level 2 course?

  • Navigation of the cameras menu (model specific)
  • Customisation of the cameras menu system
  • Understanding specific settings and controls – Picture controls / Picture Styles etc
  • Explanation of the various custom function controls
  • Explanation of the various exposure modes
  • Explanation of the various auto focus options
  • Use of the Live View mode
  • Use of HD video (where applicable)
  • Use of the manufacturers software
  • Effective use of the cameras flash system
  • Exploration of the lens system and associated accessories
  • Dust prevention methods

Software

Level 1

Suitable for: Those who have recently purchased a DSLR or compact camera and wish to manipulate their images. No prior knowledge required of editing software as this will be covered on the day as will the appropriate techniques and tools required to manipulate both Jpeg and RAW files.

Prior knowledge of workflow or organization is not required as this will also be covered on the day although it is expected that you would be fairly computer literate.

Level 2

Suitable for: Those who are familiar with various software programs and the associated workflow techniques related to the manipulation of Jpeg and RAW images / those who have attended the Level 1 courses and wish to progress to using a more advanced editing program such as Lightroom and understand the associated workflow. Prior knowledge of workflow and organization is expected along with a good degree of computer literacy.
