Convert your Flash into a Ring Flash with Ray Flash

For those of you not familiar with Ray Flash its converts your normal flash to a ring flash quickly and inexpensively. It gives a gorgeous light that’s very soft and flattering. The real beauty of the Ray Flash is its portability and ease of use, compared to a studio ring flash it’s far more compact and costs little more than a hundred pounds rather than two thousand pounds.

The Ray Flash is the original ring flash converter and although there have been various cheap Chinese knockoffs I can confidently say they lack the quality and thorough design the Ray Flash offers. I’ve previously owned one of these and found it very difficult to fit to the front of the flash and once on had a tendency to fall off.

I took the Ray Flash out for a quick shoot with my Nikon D700 and a SB-800 (which has since been replaced by the far superior Nikon SB-900). The Ray Flash slides onto the front of the flash with the lock clamping down straight on and is very secure, and with the use of the supplied rubber widget can fit onto the smaller flashgun,  in my case this was the Nikon SB 600, which seemed to be just as secure as on the SB-800.

The Ray Flash acts like any normal ring flash but due to its fairly compact nature its diffuses a little more than a true studio ring flash and of course there is some power loss but it’s still more than enough to still do shoot full length shots.

So if you're planning on shooting lots of fashion or portraits outside in bright sunlight this probably isn't the product for you, look at the Elinchrom Quadra Ranger RX with the Ring Flash accessory which gives far more power at a cost!

Although I’ve mainly spoken about this with portraits it’s still more than suitable for macro photography though lacks some of the control that you can expect from a macro light such as the Canon MR-24 or Nikon R1C1 where you can control the flash power independently on either side.

The Ray Flash offers an affordable alternative to many macro ring flash and an excellent accessory to anyone with an existing flash.
