A cost effective introduction to studio lighting systems

In 2009 Bowens released some new studio lighting heads to replace the ever popular Gemini heads. The new ‘R’ heads benefit primarily from an improved digital display which results in increased accuracy and reliable flash output and the ability to fire the heads from either a Pocket Wizard* or the own brand Bowen’s Pulsar’s*. Built to the high standard you would expect from an international brand like Bowen’s they are still constructed from a metal shell to keep them protected from the demands of day to day professional use and ideal for any photographic studio.

The heads still as you would expect accept the standard ‘S’ mount giving you a huge range of accessories, from Softlites to Maxlites; this means they will seamlessly integrate into your current photo studio setup. Aside from this they are also compatible with the accessories (flashtubes, modelling bulbs etc) from the older heads. Further to this Bowens have also redesigned the bags making them more rugged and easier to get into and now including a separate bag for the stands as of April 2010.

After the successful launch of the ‘R’s’ the Pro range came out in the summer 2009. Based on the same design as the R’s they offer a faster flash duration, up to 1/2900, and built in cooling fan, making it a real must for any professional planning to shoot throughout the day.

All the new heads are compatible with the RC-3 remote or the new compact remote, BW3960, which give the ability to control the heads from a distance making setting up or any adjustments you might need to make simpler.

On top of these releases the new Travelpak’s came out both with increased capacity but more importantly they give the option to buy spare batteries with just the top interface plate changing letting you charge one battery and shoot with another. This makes location shoots even more accessible to the Bowens photographer.

These new heads are aimed at offering the flexibility that you would expect from Bowens with a digital interface to give you, the photographer, the most control over the lighting in your pictures.
