Tamron have just announced a new 18-270VC with a new technology Piezo ultrasonic motor.
Normally image stabilisation and USM add to the bulk of a lens . However with Tamrons new system the lens is actually smaller.

The new model is much smaller and lighter than the existing 18-270VC . It weighs just 450g compared to 550g for the currrent version and is 88mm in length as opposed to 101mm . The filter size is reduced from 72mm to 62mm.
Improvements have also been made to the VC stabilisation function

This 15X zoom lens features Tamron’s unique and newly developed Piezo Drive ultrasonic motor, which provides a silent, precise and extraordinarily fast autofocus. Furthermore the high-tech VC (vibration compensation) system has been improved to allow for a more compact design. The lens handles superbly, featuring a focal range which covers just about every photographic situation. Its compactness and light-weight construction make it the ideal travel companion. It covers everything from wide-angle for landscape to telephoto for close-up photography and also offers light-macro capability at a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.8 throughout the focal length range, to magnify even the small things in life.
