Panasonic DMC-G1 Review:
The DMC-G1 represents what could be a very important first step into the future of interchangeable lens digital cameras. Up until now all 35mm based DSLRs have been built around the same reflex system as traditional film based SLRs. They have taken the path of light through a series of mirrors and prisms to the optical viewfinder and then at the point of taking the picture flipped the mirrors out of the way and exposed the film or sensor. With digital sensors this is not necessary as it’s possible to simply turn the sensor on and off to expose the photograph and could use a live feed from the sensor to frame the picture on the LCD or an electronic viewfinder (EVF). To date there have been two limiting factors against this. One is that the quality of EVFs have not matched that of an optical viewfinder and two is that the camera would have to use sensor based contrast detection autofocus like a compact camera which is not as fast as the phase detection systems used in a reflex SLR.
